In recent years, book banning has escalated, with special targeting against books by and about marginalized groups. Unite Against Book Bans recently shared that 47% of books targeted for censorship last year were titles representing the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. Such book bans are part of an ongoing effort to strip non-discrimination protections from LGBTQ+ communities. The American Library Association has issued a call to action, asking individuals to write to Congress and ask them to protect Title IX protections for the LGBTQ+ community. SAA urges its members to reach out to Congress and encourage the protection of LGBTQ+ students and staff.
