    Dear SAA members!

I am thrilled to announce the second of three Archival Vistas Briefings Seminars from the International Archival Affairs Section (IAAS).

As you might recall, the Archival Vistas Briefings virtual program series began in 2023 and discusses a topic or theme of international focus. The theme for 2024-2025 is archival standards and how we experience and use them. In each seminar, an international guest speaker(s) introduces attendees to how they have interacted with a particular standard, and shares their aspirations, implementation, and development experience with the standard. Past series' programs can be viewed here:

For this second Archival Vistas Briefings seminar, we are excited to welcome Andy Potter. He will be discussing ongoing and emerging ISO standardization efforts in the field of archives and records management in a presentation entitled: 'Navigating the Future: The Horizon of ISO Standardization in Archives and Records Management.' This online seminar is scheduled for Friday, the 11th of April 2025, from 11am-12pm EST.

Andy Potter is an expert in records management, archives, and information governance, strongly focusing on international standards development. He actively contributes to ISO technical committees, shaping global best practices in digital record keeping, archival requirements, and information governance frameworks. His work includes refining standards for electronic records management, long-term digital preservation, and integrating emerging technologies such as AI and blockchain into records systems.

Previously, Andy held a senior role at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), where he developed and implemented federal records policies, guided agencies through digital transformation, and addressed compliance challenges related to mandates such as OMB/NARA M-23-07 and M-19-21. His expertise spans records lifecycle management, information governance maturity models, and regulatory compliance.

Beyond standards work, he engages in training and consulting initiatives, helping organizations strengthen their records management capabilities and navigate evolving digital information challenges. Andy remains an influential voice in the global records and archives community, advancing best practices that support trustworthy and accessible records in the digital age.

Andy's presentation will provide an overview of ongoing and emerging ISO standardization efforts in the field of archives and records management, focusing on developments within ISO/TC 46 (Information and Documentation) and its subcommittees, particularly SC 11 (Archives/Records Management), SC 8 (Quality - Statistics and performance evaluation), and SC 10 (Requirements for Document Storage and Preservation).

    Key updates will include:

    • The revision of ISO 15489 (Records management)
    • ISO/TR 24332 (Blockchain and distributed ledger technology for records)
    • ISO/TS 7538 (Disposition requirements for records)
    • ISO 25280 (AI and records management)
    • ISO 24083 (International archives statistics)
    • ISO 11799 (Storage requirements for archives and libraries)
    • New work on archives performance metrics, assessing efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of archival programs

The session will explore how these standards address critical challenges, including digital transformation, long-term preservation, interoperability, and performance measurement. It will also highlight the role of performance metrics in enhancing accountability, resource allocation, and decision-making within archival institutions. Attendees will gain insights into emerging trends and the broader impact of international standardization on governance, compliance, and sustainable archival practices.

IAAS is thrilled to have Andy share his experiences and expertise with members of SAA and the public. Please feel free to share the event with others, all are welcome to register and attend!
