    Role:

    UNLV University Libraries seeks nominations and applications for an innovative and collaborative tenure-track faculty member to serve as the Curator for Gaming Collections. Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and Archives (SCA), the Curator for Gaming Collections acquires manuscript, archival, and rare book collections documenting the history of gambling worldwide, including casinos, sports betting, and other aspects of gaming business and culture. The curator will provide strategic direction for the growth of the collections and expand holdings in support of scholarly, student, and community research needs. They also oversee the collection and presentation of gaming industry data and supervise temporary part-time employees and student assistants as needed and as budget allows.

    Relationship building and collaboration are key aspects of this position. They will cultivate and maintain relationships with donors of collections to ensure smooth transfer of materials and to strengthen ties between SCA and the community. They will also collaborate broadly across SCA, UNLV Libraries, and the UNLV campus to promote use of the collections, contribute to archival instruction, and support relevant university initiatives. This position provides reference assistance, including a two-hour shift on the reference desk each week, and responds to remote and in-person reference questions. The Curator for Gaming Collections is also a core member of the SCA Area Leads Team which directs, coordinates, and advocates for the work and staff of the division.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
    • Minimum 2 years of experience and demonstrated skill with the professional standards and practices related to acquisition of special collections, collection development, and donor relations.
    • Evidence of ability to build and sustain relationships with donors, UNLV colleagues, allied cultural institutions and memory workers, and foundations and granting agencies to support and extend the impact of the gaming collections.
    • Evidence of strong communication, analytical, leadership, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
    • Familiarity with current trends in academic libraries, higher education, and relevant subject disciplines.
    • Ability to meet university tenure and promotion standards, demonstrated by an existing record of scholarship or creative endeavors such as published articles, exhibitions, conference presentations, or book chapters, as well as a record of professional service to local, national, or international organizations.
