George Mason University is hosting an NEH-funded 2024 summer institute on teaching and learning the history of higher education in the United States for librarians and archivists who work on the history of higher education and/or support history of higher education courses as well as for faculty and doctoral students.

Please pass along the information below to any individuals or networks you think might be interested.

Are you eager to explore the history of higher education in the United States? Improve history of higher education courses nationally? Deepen humanities engagement among future higher education leaders?

Apply today to participate in Unpacking the History of Higher Education, a George Mason University summer institute supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

    What?

The institute will feature engaging, interactive workshops led by project scholars on historical topics such as student activism, women in higher education, federal policy, the legacy of slavery, student affairs, HBCUs, HSIs, Tribal Colleges, internationalization, incarcerated students, and town-gown relationships. The project team is experienced in running institutes and in developing innovative digital humanities resources. Together we will explore and analyze the primary evidence that historians use to study the past - including films, advertisements, yearbooks, newspapers, institutional documents, legislation, and oral histories - and learn effective strategies for engaging students with these sources.

The institute includes a one-week residential component with site visits to historic institutions in the Washington, D.C. area, including Howard University, Gallaudet University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, and Northern Virginia Community College. In this wide range of settings, participants will see in person how history intersects with the past, present, and future of higher education.

    Who?

The institute is designed for faculty, advanced doctoral students, librarians, and archivists who teach, plan to teach, or support courses on the history of higher education in the United States.

1 residential week - June 10-14 [George Mason University, Fairfax, VA]
