Committee on Ethics and Professional Conduct 2025 Annual Meeting

When:  Jul 22, 2025 from 01:00 PM to 02:30 PM (CT)

DESCRIPTION

What do you do when collection donors procure items through illicit means? What if your collections have illegal items? How do we deal with admissions of crimes in our collections? Archivists have always had to deal with ethics, privacy, and illegal material. But in the moment, and without any precedent, it is hard to know what to do. The presenters will discuss case studies on real life problems encountered when processing and making archival collections available to the public in the University of Kentucky Special Collections. The case studies will include situations such as the donation of stolen material; admissions of crimes; and the description of sex work. We seek to talk practically and transparently about how to ethically describe controversial and complicated collections, realistically deal with privacy considerations; how to align practice with professional ethics; and how to answer the question “what is our legal duty?”
