Join the Native American Archives Section (NAAS) for a year in review and a special conversation about NAAS’ new project Indigenizing Archival Training https://www2.archivists.org/news/2023/saa-receives-grant-from-mellon-foundation-to-support-pilot-program-for-indigenizing-archiv?fbclid=IwAR01ORW5rI2_khFfIHHhKkF6KD03T9bfeFcoZsDhO3Lwtn8PBdqjwooMrhU, a yearlong pilot program that centers Indigenous needs and perspectives in the archives profession. Our discussion will feature a presentation and discussion with guest panelists and IAT instructors, Vina Begay (Diné) and Gena Peone (Lakes Band of the Colville Confederated Tribes). Come learn more about this unique program that strives to reframe Western-created "best practices" in archives and recenter Indigenous values and traditional stewardship practices.
Vina Begay, MLIS, MBA
Assistant Librarian, Arizona State University
Vina Begay is a member from the Dine Nation and is the Assistant Librarian for Arizona State University (ASU). Her position has numerous responsibilities, but not limited, to the acquisition, processing, care, and management of Indigenous Archival Materials, additionally, her responsibilities is to review, develop, and ensure the Protocols are applied to ASU’s entire archival workflow and library circulated materials. Aside from her archival collection responsibilities, Vina works with numerous tribal communities in collaboration with ASU’s Community Driven Archives department in assisting and providing professional archival training. Before her employment with ASU, she has served as a Tribal Archive Consultant for several tribal communities, by providing professional archival training and help establish cultural archives tailored to the Tribe’s cultural practices, community, and governance structure. She has also served as a Tribal Liaison for many Universities and cultural institutions. Vina holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater, Master in Business Administration, and a Master in Library Science with an emphasis in Archival Studies and Digital Information Management.
Gena Peone, MLIS
Archivist, Northwest Indian Fisheries
Gena Peone is an enrolled citizen of the Spokane Tribe and a descendant of the Lakes Band of the Colville Confederated Tribes. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities from the University of Washington where she also obtained a Certificate in Museum Studies. Gena earned a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University in Management, Digitization and Preservation of Cultural Heritage Records. Her professional interests are in cultural preservation, spanning historic records and material culture. While it is important to have academic and technical skills in this line of work, Gena believes it’s equally valuable to understand and incorporate cultural aspects of collections management and object interpretation. She looks forward to projects that help tell stories that are relevant, accurate, and personal as a way to challenge us to use our powerful histories to create dialogue and understanding while building a robust art community.
