DESCRIPTION
The Archivists and Archives of Color Subcommittee is pleased to host Miguel de Baca, Senior Program Officer, Getty Foundation, Jennifer Morris, Archivist at the Anacostia Community Museum and Dominique Luster, founder of The Luster Company for a conversation on the Black Visual Arts Archives initiative (BVAA) to share out their truly amazing findings, to take questions from the audience, and to show the potential for what this type of funding can accomplish. Each organization has a unique story about the transformative institutional impact and new collaborations their projects have afforded them.
Getty began the BVAA initiative in 2021, initially in a pilot phase, to support the accessibility and discoverability of Black visual arts archives nationally. This past year, they have gained permission to proceed past the pilot phase, which will put millions in the hands of the repository institutions that have kept the generational memory of Black visual arts vibrant and alive in the United States. Pilot-phase grantees – Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Fisk University, Chicago Public Library, Temple University’s Charles Blockson Afro-American Collection, and the Anacostia Community Museum.
