Committee on Public Awareness (COPA) 2024 Annual Meeting

When:  Jul 1, 2024 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (CT)

DESCRIPTION

The COPA members meet each month to identify and discuss key issues and challenges that archivists face when communicating externally with stakeholders and the general public. Learn more about what COPA has worked on so far and our plans going forward, including updates on media training and the revival of the ArchivesAware! blog.

The meeting will take place on July 1, which also happens to be International Joke Day. As part of the ArchivesAware! refresh, we will conduct a live interview with guest speakers Dr. Laura LaPlaca and Ashley Senske of the National Comedy Center archives that was established in 2018 as the United States’ Congressionally-designated research and preservation hub for the history of comedy. They will share updates on their collections as well as a few jokes.

About the speakers:

Dr. Laura LaPlaca is the director of the National Comedy Center’s archives. She has collaborated with dozens of comedians and their estates to build a growing collection that spans all eras and genres of the art form, from Lucille Ball’s polka dot dress and Lenny Bruce’s typewriter to creative papers from the minds of innovators like George Carlin and Betty White, and production records from the writers’ rooms of landmark series like “In Living Color” and “Saturday Night Live.” In addition to helming preservation and research activities, she is part of the executive team that steers exhibit development, programming, and educational outreach initiatives across the organization.

Ashley Senske currently serves as the Collections Manager for the National Comedy Center, the nation’s congressionally-designated repository for comedy history and the first cultural institution dedicated to presenting and preserving the vital story of comedy. At the Comedy Center, she oversees acquisitions, preservation, research, and exhibition of artifacts from the careers of artists including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Betty White, The Smothers Brothers, Carol Burnett, The Marx Brothers, Carl Reiner, Joan Rivers, Garry Shandling, Jonathan Winters, Harold Ramis, Rodney Dangerfield, and dozens of others.
