On April 15, 1874, the Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, etc. opened their inaugural exhibition. Thirty-one artists participated, including Berthe Morisot, who would continue to exhibit with the group of artists thereafter known as the Impressionists. While Berthe Morisot is perhaps the most famous of the Impressionist women painters alongside Mary Cassatt and Eva Gonzalès, she was but one of the women active in the Parisian art scene in 1874. This talk will consider the women artists whose works were on display during that pivotal year, both at the first Impressionist exhibition and the official Salon.

This webinar is part of the "Women of the Impressionist Circle" series in honor of the 150th anniversary of the inaugural Impressionist exhibition and the women artists, writers, collectors, philanthropists, and advisors who shaped the international success of one of the most referential art movements in history. Past speakers include Dr. Laura Corey (The Metropolitan Museum of Art), Dr. Anna Swinbourne (Hill-Stead Museum), Dorthe Vangsgaard Nielsen (Ordupgaard) and French art historian Marie Caroline Sainsaulieu. Past webinars were recorded and are available on our YouTube channel
