"From Emancipation to Desegregation: Black Experiences through Materials at MSU Archives"
Mississippi State University's archival holdings include thousands of materials, many of which exemplify the experiences of African Americans throughout the south. This panel will showcase a unique selection of MSU's materials that display Black Americans' long struggle for civil rights in the south. Using a range of different mediums of holdings, the panelists will explain the significance of the different records, show their connection to Black experiences in the south, and give examples of how they could be utilized for research, instruction, and outreach. The panel will show the variety of useful materials in MSU's archive and display how these records can be used to study Black history in the American South. *redacted presenter* will present a collection of digital records of MSU's newspaper, the Reflector from the 1980's. These articles show snippets of Black student lives, the state of Starkville in the decades following the civil rights act, and the process of integration and discrimination on campus. *redacted presenter* will show Operation Breadbasket documents from the Addie Wyatt collection, highlighting a gendered and labor perspective on the struggle for Civil Rights. *redacted presenter* will present architectural drawings from a range of collections, showing how these drawings reveal how segregation and discrimination were built into the lived environment. *redacted presenter* will present on the Williams collection of Lincolniana's upcoming exhibit on African Americans, Abraham Lincoln, and 1864. Taken together, Mississippi State is a unique location for examining the struggle for civil rights from the nineteenth century to today.
