In each seminar, an international guest speaker introduces participants to the issues and advancements in their local context, describing the history, operating environment and unique aspects of archival practice in their country.

Guest speakers: Professor Shirley Carvalhêdo Franco (Coordinator of the Archival Science course at the University of Brasilia's College of Information Science) and Professor Johanna Smit (University of São Paulo)

About: Professor Johanna Smit will lead off, sharing her extensive expertise and focusing on her collaborative work with Professors Ana Maria Camargo and Heloisa Liberali Bellotto in developing the Central Record Plan System at the University of São Paulo (SAUSP). She will delve into the historical and operational aspects of archival practices in São Paulo, showcasing the academic diversity and expertise at SAUSP. Her presentation will cover the development and management of SAUSP, including archival typology, the functional classification plan, and the document retention schedule. Additionally, she will pay tribute to the significant contributions of Professors Camargo and Bellotto to the Brazilian undergraduate program in Record and Archival Science, honoring their legacies following their recent passing.
In her segment, Prof. Shirley Carvalhêdo Franco will begin with an homage to Professor Bellotto, the pioneering first coordinator of the University of Brasilia's (UnB) undergraduate program in Record and Archival Science. She will focus on Brasilia's unique role as Brazil's Federal Capital, the evolutionary journey of its university, and the significant impact of its Record and Archival Science program, including the role of its University Central Archive. This presentation will conclude with insights on the current state of UnB's science archives, offering valuable regional perspectives.
