SAA's Response(s) to Current Events

The Society of American Archivists continues monitoring news that affects archivists and the archives profession.

Following the Wall Street Journal's October article, the SAA's Statement on Political Interference, and the Archivists of the United States' responses to both, SAA's Executive Committee has observed an undercurrent that calls into question how and when current topics are addressed by SAA's leadership teams.

SAA's Criteria for Advocacy Statements describes the "prudent and potential impact" considered when taking positions, making statements, or taking actions on issues. These stances come from much deliberation and also involve the use of a Decision Tree (2024 implementation) to ensure leadership is working in the best interest of the Society and archives workers more broadly.

Although we cannot address every topic or article in a public manner, we do discuss every issue as part of the business of SAA. We'd like to offer our thanks for your understanding of SAA's processes when responding to current events. Please feel free to contact me at president@archivists.org if you have any questions.
