It seems there is some interest in starting a member-run professional development book club. After careful consideration and some insight from other SAA members, I found that there are a few other groups that focus on discussing new articles in the field. Rather than adding article discussions to this specific book club, I thought I would share some of them here for reference.
The Reference, Access, and Outreach Section plans to host article discussions in the future.
The New England Archivists have a Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies (JCAS) reading group.
The Digital Preservation Coalition also hosts a reading club for members.
For those interested in the book club, I have set up a Fable Book Club (an app for online book discussions). The Club is titled SAA Member Book Club if you want to join it through the website, or I have added a link to the club below to connect on the Fable app.
Fable Book Club
Fable allows discussion for each chapter of the book as well as a final reflection. As we start getting this book club running, the tools and discussion formats may change, but I think Fable is a great way to allow members who may not have the time to commit to a full book reading to still be able to participate in discussions.
Finally, I have also set up a Google Sheet for members to add books they think would be useful or beneficial to read. It is fairly simple: Title, Authors, Publication Date, and a Link to Purchase. The way the sheet is set up currently allows members to add comments rather than being able to edit the document as a whole, which will help to eliminate duplicates or accidental deletions.
Our first book:
Decolonial Archival Futures written by Krista McCracken and Skylee-Storm Hogan-Stacey
We will begin reading in September, but feel free to join the discussion on Fable early or add other books to the list before then.
