Registration is now open for the Society of American Archivists - Archivists of Religious Collections Section first session of 2023!
Please join us for an Archival Chat on January 19 at 3:00 pm EST/EDT. The topic is: History and Planning for the Boston College Catholic Religious Archives Repository.
Many Roman Catholic archives will need to find new homes in the future as membership in religious communities declines. Are you planning for the future disposition of your archives? Does transfer to an academic repository appeal to you, or are there other solutions you have considered?
Boston College has established a Catholic Religious Archives Repository to assist in the collection, preservation, and study of institutional records and documents belonging to Catholic religious orders and congregations in the United States and Canada. The repository will be part of the University's library system, and will be guided by an advisory committee of archivists and faculty associated with Boston College. After materials have been evaluated, accepted, and processed, they will be available for use by students and scholars seeking to learn about the contributions of religious communities of men and women to the Catholic Church, Catholic life, and the wider culture.
Let's have a lively chat about this exciting initiative, and some of the issues you are facing with the future of your archives. Is an academic repository an ideal solution for you? What are the considerations in terms of ownership, access, copyright, processing, and deaccessioning? Are alternatives like collaborative archives or public archives better or worse options for you? Come prepared to share your thoughts on this and other options for preserving Catholic history. This Archival Chat should be of interest to leaders and archivists and researchers.
This chat session will not be recorded.
The presenter is Michael Burns, the Associate Director of the Boston College Catholic Archives Repository. He is a 1965 graduate of the Jesuits' Marquette University where he earned the traditional Jesuit Latin baccalaureate degree in History, Literature, and Philosophy. He has a graduate degree, also in History, from Harvard University.
