You are invited to an upcoming webinar jointly hosted by the SAA Collection Management and Description Sections.

Our panelists, who represent a university special collections department, a museum library, and a corporate archives, will present on their experiences with backlog surveying and accessioning, collection moves, and artifact management.

    Moving the Phillips Library

Hilary Streifer, Associate Manuscript Librarian at the Peabody Essex Museum's Phillips Library, will discuss the library's 2018 collections move from a temporary facility into a permanent space, 15 miles away. She will discuss the year-long preparations and planning that took place, as well as the moving process, and lessons learned.

1,000 Pieces and Counting: Stewarding the Polaroids Artifacts Collection

Baker Library Special Collections and Archives at Harvard Business School holds the business records of the Polaroid Corporation which includes over 1,000 museum-type artifacts. Nearly a year ago we took a leap into the unknown as it became evident that we needed to finally address what to do with the artifacts. Join Mary Samouelian, Manager of Archival Processing and Debra Cuoco, Paper Conservator for Special Collections as they describe their collaborative approach for organizing, housing, preserving, describing, and making these artifacts accessible to their user community. They will share what worked and what didn't work, explain the time and effort to undertake a project like this, including labor and supply costs associated with the project, and what the library intends to do differently going forward as it continues to receive artifacts in collections.

What in the Backlog? A Survey & Assessment

Melissa Lawton, Archivist for Collections Management at Northern Arizona University Cline Library's Special Collections & Archives, will share a brief overview of an ongoing backlog assessment project in SCA. Working closely with colleague Sam Meier, Archivist for Discovery, the assessment has not only improved management of existing collections but presents the opportunity to develop a more robust collaborative process for incoming accessions and processing prioritization. Melissa will discuss the methodology, findings, planned next steps, and lessons learned during the multi-year project.

The webinar will take place on April 29th at 11am PST/2pm EST.

Please RSVP for this event here.

We hope to see you there!
