The Description Section Steering Committee is happy to announce the Section's Annual Business Meeting agenda and open registration. The meeting will be held Friday, July 25, from 2 PM-3:30 PM EDT.
Held virtually, the meeting will include reflections from the Steering Committee on our past year and the current moment, as well as our plans for the year ahead that are already in place. We'll also have space for updates from colleagues from SAA Council, TS-DACS, TS-EAS, SNAC, and DadoCM.
We will also host a panel discussion regarding the descriptive quandaries that arise when archivists are faced with reprocessing legacy collections. Talks will explore questions such as: What are the tradeoffs involved in repurposing existing description, especially when it conflicts with DACS? What are strategies for transparency in documenting collection context and processing decisions? What skills are necessary in successfully communicating with stakeholders not trained as archivists but invested in a collection? We hope this session will provide food for thought in navigating archival debt and establishing reasonable expectations for reprocessing. The panelists include Max Goldberg, Harvard Library; Sarah Scheldes, Mary Baker Eddy Library; and Caitlin Stamm and Katie Mascari, St. Louis University.
