Records in Context (RiC) Wikibase Working Session with Regine Heberlein

Have you wondered what using Records in Contexts (RiC) would or could look like in practice? If so, this hands-on session is for you!

Records in Contexts is an international standard developed by the International Council on Archives (ICA) to rethink archival description. Instead of describing records in a strict hierarchy, RiC supports a graph model to represent the relationships between records, people, institutions, events, and concepts.

Using a Wikibase implementation of the RiC Conceptual Model (RiC-CM), participants will learn to create and link RiC metadata. The goal of the session is to introduce a Sandbox where practitioners can get a concrete sense of how RiC can interact with workflows and descriptive metadata by messing with some data in a low-stakes environment. Bring a record you'd like to make into RiC, or make one up on the spot! While the session is not going to provide a comprehensive introduction to RiC, it will provide some basic context. Along the way, we'll explore questions of how RiC compares to current descriptive practices and how that may inform the way forward.
