Hello fellow MARSites! Our annual section meeting will be Wednesday July 24 at 11:00 (Central). We will announce the winner of our most recent election for Vice Chair/Chair Elect and discuss the future of the section. After receiving the results of SAA's section health assessment, the steering council thought it would be a good time to talk as a group about what the members want out of MARS and how we will operate moving forward.
We will wrap up the meeting with a presentation from Sheon Montgomery from the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech University "Just a Hop, Skip and a Jump: Developing a Project Specific Thesaurus for Innovative Access". Ms. Montgomery will discuss developing a keyword thesaurus for our ArchivesSpace public interface to provide researchers with groups of closely related terms to help guide their searches. The thesaurus provides inherent context as well as opportunities to retrieve documents which might otherwise be missed due to the use of a term unknown to the researchers, a variant spelling by the document's creator, a slang term specific to an era, or military jargon. This tool has been used for years to provide enhanced access to our over 10 million pages of digitized documents in the Virtual Vietnam Archive.
