Good day archives colleagues,
I am again thrilled to invite you to attend the second of three Archival Vistas Briefings virtual events!
As a companion to the successful IAAS Archival Landscapes series, the SAA International Archival Affairs Section is pleased to continue this additional initiative.
Archival Vistas Briefings is a series of virtual events that addresses topics or subjects that literally know no boundaries, geographic or otherwise. This year's focus is "archives at risk."
We continue our journey, narrowing the focus a bit, by hosting a conversation with Dr. Saad Eskander, former Director (during 2003 US invasion) of the Iraq National Library and Archives and current Cultural Heritage Adviser, Iraq Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities.
Dr. Eskander will discuss his position as the chief steward of his nation's historical records when facing direct wartime threats not only to his records but also to his staff. He will also discuss some recent successes nearly two decades after the invasion.
As a primer, you are welcome to listen to an interview with Dr. Eskander as recorded 29 May 2020 via "An Archivist's Tale" podcast found at https://www.spreaker.com/user/archiviststale/118-saad-eskander.
Please register for the event at

And please join us via zoom on May 17, 12-1p, EDT at
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85615505938
For full transparency, this event will be recorded and accessible via the SAA YouTube channel playlist, "Archival Vistas Briefings" #IAAS.
Please feel free to share this message widely; all are welcome to attend!
Also worth calendar-marking is our third and final AVB event on June 16, 12-1p EDT when we shall host Dr. Maryna Paliienko, Head of the Archival Science and Special Branches of History Department, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
Thank you very much for your interest and see you on May 17 if not before!
Sincerely,
Prof. Karen Trivette, MLS
