Please join the Oral History and Privacy & Confidentiality sections on June 1 for a joint business meeting featuring two speakers who will discuss privacy and confidentiality considerations in the use of AI tools when processing oral history and audio collections.
Archivist Ken Axford will share the privacy-related issues he considered when testing AI tools for metadata collection from 30+ years of radio recordings, and oral historian Doug Boyd will discuss development of the "SpeakEZ," an in-house platform that uses AI to process oral history interviews, including to identify privacy and confidentiality concerns in recordings .
Ken Axford is a Project Archivist at the University at Buffalo (UB) Libraries, specializing in digital preservation and audio conversion for the WBFO project. He focuses on large-scale collection processing, metadata creation, and student supervision within the University Archives, with recent work involving AI in archival workflows.
Doug Boyd is the director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky Libraries. He is also an archivist, folklorist, musician, and author who is known for his work regarding oral history and digital technologies, including his work designing and managing the OHMS system (Oral History Metadata Synchronizer).
The meeting will take place on June 1 at 11 AM PT/2 PM ET and is expected to last an hour and a half. We will begin with brief business updates from each section before hearing from our speakers. The program will conclude with questions from the audience. This event will not be recorded.
