    The Library (https://library.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for an innovative and collaborative Reference Archivist to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Archives Reading Room and contribute to the accessioning and processing of University Archives and Special Collections materials. 


    This position reports directly to the Research Services and Instruction Archivist and works with the Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation Department as a whole by responding to user-driven requests and reference needs and facilitating the discovery of archival collections. The position serves as the point of contact for archival reference services and contributes to the creation of online discovery tools and access to collections through the arrangement and description of physical archival and special collections. The Archivist will participate in library-wide committees, activities, and working groups, and in meetings, workshops, and trainings for continued professional development, to remain informed and engaged with relevant current trends. 


    This is a 12-month non-tenure track faculty position with an effort distribution of 45% archival reference, 35% archival processing, 10% scholarship, and 10% professional service to the library profession. Up to two (2) years credit for previous professional experience may be given at the time of employment, in which case such credit will be stated in the offer letter. This is not a remote position, but some teleworking hours are supported.


    This position vacancy will be filled at the rank of Archivist I. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Non-tenure Track Academic Faculty ranks as outlined in section 3.2.2 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook (https://www.policylibrary.gatech.edu/faculty-handbook/3.2.2-non-tenure-track-academic-faculty-members-hiring-and-promotion-guidelines)Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization. 


    Responsibilities: 

    Provide and improve library services and resources; enrich the research, learning, and scholarship of the Georgia Tech community through the following: 

    45% Archival Reference and Reading Room Services

    • Maintain the Archives Reading Room, including upkeep of supplies and technology in the space, the delivery of collections to and from offsite storage, and the maintenance of collection stacks and reading room storage.
    • Monitor the department's online contact form and email portal and respond to reference and research questions from Georgia Tech students, faculty, staff, or researchers external to the Institute.
    • Research, develop, and communicate best practices, policies, and workflows for archival reference services supporting the needs of user groups in-person and remotely. 
    • Assist in creating research tools for facilitating access to Archives and Special Collections materials, such as video tutorials, learning modules, or online research guides.

    35% Archival Processing

    • Accession and process University Archives and Special Collections materials.
    • Create DACS-compliant finding aids using ArchivesSpace to make collections discoverable to researchers.
    • Utilize archival systems (ArchivesSpace, Archive-IT, DSpace, Aeon, etc.) to facilitate access to archival collections.
    • Engage in the arrangement, description, and access of physical collections.   

    10% Scholarship and Creative Endeavors 

    • According to expectations for library faculty members, contribute professionally through research, scholarship, and creative activities. 

    10% Service to the Library, Institute, and Archival Profession 

    • Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff and promote the Institute and Library's commitment to the Georgia Tech values. 
    • Serve on library and university committees as assigned. 
    • Contribute to the profession through service to professional organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels, as appropriate.
    This is a benefits-eligible position with a salary of $67,498.
