    I'm happy to share the posting for an open position at Boston College.

    The John J. Burns Library of rare books, special collections, and archives at Boston College seeks a creative, collaborative instruction and public services librarian (or archivist) to coordinate, deliver, and support a range of user-focused services, including:

    • integrating special collections materials in teaching and learning

    • supervising onsite and remote reference and research services

    • participating in the Burns Library outreach program through blogs, social media, exhibits, and other avenues

    The ideal candidate will have a passion for effective, efficient, and user-centered public services. They will have the demonstrated ability to contribute to a team environment where consultation, communication, creativity, and flexibility are essential. A strong service orientation is key, as is a desire to partner with other library staff to foster and encourage the use of special collections resources and services. They will have enthusiastic approaches to reference, teaching, and outreach opportunities, and the ability to adapt to serve our audiences better.

    REQUIRED:

    • A master's degree in library, archives, or information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent degree/experience in an archives, special collections library, research library, or cultural institution setting

    • At least two years of experience in providing reference and instruction services in an archives, special collections library, research library, or cultural institution setting

    • A strong commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of library work

    • The ability to work collaboratively and collegially with diverse groups

    • A demonstrated ability to explain and clarify information to staff and researchers possessing different degrees of aptitude 

    • Effective and engaging reference, presentation and/or instruction skills 

    • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

    • The ability to manage multiple responsibilities at once, to focus on priority tasks while keeping track of other projects, and to meet deadlines.

    • A proven ability to work independently and collaboratively

    • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours

    • Willingness and interest in continual learning through work-related experiences, training, and professional development 


    PREFERRED: 

    • Previous full-time personnel management experience

    • Previous project management experience

    • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in research and instructional services

    • Knowledge of the Aeon and ArchivesSpace public user interface systems

    • Knowledge of primary source information literacy theory and practice 

    • Knowledge of Active Learning techniques 

    • At least 2 years of experience in providing outreach services in an archives, special collections library, or cultural institution setting

    Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $65,800 to $82,250; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
