    Archivist -- Kennedy Institute of Ethics (Georgetown University)

    The Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) at Georgetown University is a research center where ethicists engage in rigorous, sustained conversations with experts and practitioners across disciplines to respond to the pressing ethical issues of our time. The KIE helped invent the field of bioethics – the ethics of health, the environment, and emerging technology -- beginning a tradition of creative leadership in practical ethics that continues into the twenty-first century. Established in 1971, it is one of the oldest academic ethics centers in the world and has a rich history.

    The Archivist for the Kennedy Institute of Ethics will manage, process, and build the archives of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. Reporting to the Head of Archival Processing in the Georgetown University Library's Booth Family Center for Special Collections, the Archivist for the KIE will be responsible for managing the KIE's archival collection, including the processing and authoring of relevant finding aids. This role is vital in developing and sustaining collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and staff in support of campus teaching, learning, research, and also in participating in outreach and programming to engage students, faculty, visiting researchers, and staff. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Conduct reference and outreach services for the collection with resident and visiting faculty, researchers, and students.

    • Work closely with the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics to selectively solicit and acquire additional archival materials related to the rich history of the KIE and the field of bioethics.

    • Collaborate with the Program and Reference Specialist and Technical Services Manager in the Bioethics Research Library which is affiliated with the KIE and overseen by the Georgetown University Library.

    • Occasionally support the work of colleagues in the BRL in the areas of collections, research services, and public services, participating in regular staff meetings of the KIE.

    • Collaborate closely with the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics to build relationships with donors and develop the collection.

    Requirements and Qualifications

    • An ALA-accredited MLS with emphasis on archives (or experience equivalent to an archives concentration)

    • Minimum two years of professional experience working in a special collections or archival repository

    • Experience processing archival collections and providing reference and research services

    • Firm understanding of archival theory and practice, including national standards for archival materials, such as DACS and EAD

    • Working knowledge of or familiarity with ArchivesSpace or other archival management systems; knowledge of or familiarity with other relevant standards, such as Dublin Core

    • Demonstrated ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team environment

    • Demonstrated experience and a strong commitment to making rare and archival materials accessible, as well as to providing reference services in a specialized research environment

    • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail, along with excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

    • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Interest and educational background in the field of Bioethics

    • Experience working on archival digitization projects

    • Experience hiring and supervising students

    • Demonstrated experience in fundraising and/or obtaining grants

    • Experience with donor outreach and stewardship

    • Experience supporting instructional sessions

    Pay Range:

    The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

    $47,586.00 - $87,558.13

    Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
