    Specialist Librarian (PLB2/4A) 

    The University of Iowa Libraries seeks to hire an Accessioning and Processing Archivist at the Specialist Librarian classification (PLB2/4A) in the Special Collections & Archives department. Under the general direction of the University Archivist, the Accessioning and Processing Archivist is responsible for the accessioning, processing, and collection management of archival collections representing a wide variety of formats, including paper, audiovisual, and born digital, within the University Archives. The individual collaborates with the University Archivist and other colleagues within and outside of the Special Collections & Archives department to assess and accession new collection materials and work toward larger project goals such as the establishment of workflows and policies for incoming born digital material. Priorities for this position's work will be to collaborate in developing strategies for addressing legacy descriptive and arrangement practices and engaging in reparative archival work, and to improve discoverability of collection materials, particularly those created by individuals and groups from Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) or Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, plus (LGBTQIA+) communities. 

    Specific duties and responsibilities include: 

    • Coordinate and perform the accessioning and processing of University Archives collections in all formats and manage collection information in collection management software. 
    • Supervise and train students in University Archives processing and related activities. 
    • Participate in the Special Collections & Archives Processing Group, actively engaging in projects such as creating a unified Processing Manual, updating training methods across repositories, and developing and implementing workflows for born digital material.  
    • Collaborate with other processing staff to create sustainable processing workflows.  
    • Provide reference services and support day-to-day operations. 
    • Create and contribute to additional collection discovery tools. 
    • With other departmental staff, coordinate location and shelving decisions to effectively manage storage space. 
    • Contribute as appropriate to the development of grant narratives, work plans, and budgets. 
    • Collaborate closely with colleagues working in areas of collection development, archival and manuscript processing, preservation, and digitization. 
    • Keep abreast of developments in archival standards and developments, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate. 
    • Contribute to department-level planning and the formulation of new policies and procedures. 
    • Actively support the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace. 
    • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching. 
    • Participate in and contribute to relevant library and university-wide activities and committees. 
    • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.  

    Qualifications:  

    Required Qualifications 

    • A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent international degree; or in archival studies; or in a related field with a focus on archival studies. 
    • Training in, or demonstrated knowledge of, archival theory and practice. 
    • Demonstrated knowledge of national metadata content and structure standards for archival materials, such as DACS and EAD.  
    • Understanding of extensible processing practices and ability to apply processing levels and use minimal processing techniques.  
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.  
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace, academic setting, or community.  

    Preferred Qualifications 

    • One year of professional experience. 
    • Experience arranging and describing archival collections. 
    • Demonstrated experience working with the collection management system ArchivesSpace. 
    • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata and description resources, such as Library of Congress Subject Headings, AAT: Art & Architecture Thesaurus, the Homosaurus, Metadata Best Practices for Trans and Gender Diverse Resources, and Anti-Racist Description Resources (Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia Anti-Racist Description Working Group).

    The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $52,500 – $64,000
