Introducing the Apollo Theater Archives
Harlem's historic Apollo Theater first opened its doors in January of 1934 – yet its archives were not formally established until December of 2017. Join Apollo Theater archivist Brad San Martin for a presentation tracing the archives' progress over the past six years – from a decentralized, partially inventoried collection to an almost fully digitized and catalogued repository documenting the history, operations, and vast cultural influence of one of America's most important stages. In addition to key takeaways and technical insights, San Martin will highlight surprising (and previously unseen) discoveries from the collection, unexpected challenges encountered along the way, and the Apollo Archives' recent forays into public programming.
About Brad San Martin
Since late 2017, Brad San Martin has been the staff archivist Harlem's historic Apollo Theater – the first person to hold this role. Prior to that he worked extensively in the music and travel industries in a number of capacities, and has produced and annotated a number of CD reissue projects, ranging from Kentucky coal-mining songs to new south avant-pop.
About the Apollo Theater
The legendary Apollo-the soul of American culture-plays a vital role in cultivating emerging artists and launching legends. Since its founding, The Apollo has served as a center of innovation and a creative catalyst for Harlem, the city of New York, and the world. In February 2024, The Apollo will open The Apollo Stages at The Victoria, which will include two new theater spaces, and begin the renovation of its Historic Theater, marking the first ever expansion and renovation of The Apollo in its nearly 90-year history. We hope to see you at the meeting!
