Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to share the launch of the U.S. Slavery & Abolition (USSA) Archive, a newly
compiled digital repository of primary-source materials documenting slavery and abolition
in America.
The USSA Archive brings together a wide range of historically significant records – including
handwritten bills of sale, estate inventories, merchant ledgers, tax documents, personal
correspondence, and abolitionist materials – to support scholarly inquiry across economic,
social, and political histories of the period. The collection is structured to enable rigorous
analysis of systems, networks, and lived experiences central to understanding slavery and
its legacies.
Presented by The Edward E. Haddock Jr. Family Foundation, the USSA Archive reflects a
commitment to advancing restorative relationships, affirming human dignity, and
supporting a more complete and accessible historical record. As the archival partner, The
Luster Company led processing, metadata development, and digital structuring to
facilitate discoverability, interoperability, and sustained academic use.
