    Dear colleagues,

Hello from the California History Section in the California State Library!

We wanted to let you know about our upcoming event in our free virtual speaker series, which we thought might be of interest:

    • Tuesday, May 19, 4:00-5:00 PM: Native Hawaiians in California: A Conversation with Dr. David Chang and Jasmin 'Iolani Hakes - Join us for a conversation where history meets fiction. While Dr. David Aiona Chang will explore who these Kānaka (Native Hawaiian) migrants were, why they came to California, and how they helped shape California history, Jasmin ʻIolani Hakes will explore how fiction can illuminate and augment what colonial record-keeping ignored and avoided and bring to light the largely erased presence of Hawaiian laborers in Gold Rush-era California.  To learn more about our panel and the event or to register, please visit our event registration page

Feel free to distribute information about this event to anyone you think may have an interest. If you'd like a flyer for the event, please email us at cslcal@library.ca.gov, and we will send one as an attachment.

We hope you'll be able to attend this event!

    Best,

    California History Section
