    Hi all,

Please join the Society of Mississippi Archivists for a Virtual Table Talk on Friday, June 30th at 12:00 pm CDT.

Angela Stewart, archivist at the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, will present "The Legacy of the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival."

In honor of the Margaret Walker Center celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival, this Virtual Table Talk will discuss the inaugural event, which was held in November 1973. In this presentation, the speaker will share highlights from the event, all of which have been documented in the personal papers of Margaret Walker and the institute's administrative records. This presentation will serve to remind us of Walker's motivation for organizing the event: "A need to conquer the fear of becoming invisible and ultimately forgotten drove her. In Walker's thinking, one way to that was to prove that remarkable things could happen in Mississippi that might not be possible anywhere else" (from Maryemma Graham?s THE HOUSE WHERE MY SOUL LIVES, p. 405).
