The Description Section is seeking nominations for three openings on the Steering Committee. Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague for one of these positions.

The Vice Chair/Chair-Elect is a two-year term, serving the first year as Vice Chair and the second year as Chair. The Chair-Elect assists the Chair in conducting section business. In the absence of the Chair, the Chair-Elect assumes the duties of Chair. The Chair-Elect becomes the Chair of the section in the second year of the term. The Chair presides over section meetings and serves as ex-officio member of the Technical Subcommittee on Descriptive Standards. With the advice and assistance of the steering committee, the Chair directs section activities, appoints liaisons, and submits a final annual section report to SAA Council following the end of their term as Chair. Both the Chair and Chair-Elect serve on the editorial team for the section blog, Descriptive Notes. The Chair remains on the steering committee for a third year, but does not lead the committee. The Secretary position is a two-year term, and is mainly responsible for taking meeting minutes and coordinating the annual section election. Additional responsibilities include updating the section's microsite as needed or directed by the Chair. (1 opening)

A Member-at-Large serves a two-year term, participates in steering committee meetings, and provides input and general support to the Section Steering Committee. They may be assigned to specific tasks as needed by the Chair. There are two Members-at-Large at all times, serving staggered terms. (1 opening)

In the 2026-2027 year, the Description Section will continue to build upon collaborations with other sections and subcommittees and develop webinars and other online forums for description-focused conversations. We will also continue to develop our blog, Descriptive Notes, and the Description Documentation Portal, which is available on the SAA website. The Steering Committee meets every other month in addition to the annual meeting over the summer.
