Please join us and listen to Megan K. Friedel share a presentation entitled: Access to Federal Law Enforcement Records at Non-Federal Public Institutions: Balancing Custody, Privacy, Records Laws, and More
What happens when federal law enforcement investigation records end up at public state or local institutions? How can archivists untangle the legal considerations for these documents, in order to both provide access to them and protect the privacy concerns of those who the records document? In this presentation, we'll explore a model for how archivists can assess key issues for these records, such as federal and state records laws, custodianship, reputational risks, and privacy concerns not protected by law, with an aim towards research access and use.
Megan K. Friedel's Bio:
Megan K. Friedel is the interim co-director of Rare and Distinctive Collections at the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, where she also serves as Head of Archives. She received her MLIS from Simmons College in 2002 and has spent over twenty years in the profession as an archivist at state historical societies and academic archives. She is also the co-author, with Ashlyn Velte and Jamie Marie Wagner, of Providing Access to Privacy-Protected Records at Public Institutions in the Age of Radical Empathy: Cases and Considerations, currently under review for publication by SAA Publications.
We anticipate having time to answer some questions following the presentation. This presentation won't be recorded, so you won't want to miss this!
C&UA's Coffee Chats, begun in March 2020, have had the mission to give voice to you, our section membership, and to inform all interested others. We invite you to lend your voice to the discussion!
Thank you to all of our loyal participants and welcome to all newcomers!
Sincerely,
Helena Egbert, Vice Chair of C&UA
