Hello colleagues,
We are an informal group of archivists and memory workers in Greater Boston who work to provide access to materials pertaining to Boston's history of school desegregation. In preparation for the approaching 50th anniversary of the 1974 order made by Judge Garrity for students to be bused to desegregate schools, we invite and encourage our fellow New England area archives to review, highlight and share any materials they may have in their collection related to the long history of racial imbalance in Boston's Public Schools and the implementation and ongoing history of school desegregation.
The records you share that are preserved in your collections and/or made digitally available will be highlighted on a soon to be revised Boston School Desegregation records portal and included as a part of a press packet that we plan to develop and distribute, with additional potential for Digital Commonwealth-based collaborations.
Contact for more information: Molly Brown, mo.brown@northeastern.edu.
If you would like to be included in future conversations about observing the history of Boston school desegregation in events, outreach and beyond, please contact Andrew Elder, andrew.elder@umb.edu.
