    The Division of Archives and Records (State Archives of North Carolina) vision is to be a national leader in providing quality guidance on information stewardship in North Carolina and in creating simplified and integrated access to authentic information.  The State Archives of North Carolina's mission is to collect, preserve, manage and provide access to information that protects citizen rights, documents North Carolina history and culture, promotes transparency, and encourages stewardship of government records.

    Description of Work:

    The Records Description Unit of the Government Records Section seeks a Digital Government Records Archivist to serve as a specialist in arranging and describing born-digital content. The position is responsible for providing a wide range of archival services such as:

    • appraising records for archival value;
    • performing preservation actions on born-digital records;
    • processing records of all formats (including audio-visual);
    • increasing access by producing descriptive metadata and producing finding aids;
    • providing timely and accurate reference services for processed and unprocessed collections;
    • and researching and applying confidentiality statutes to restricted materials.

    The archivist collaborates with other description archivists to incorporate digital records processing into their workflows and works directly with the Digital Services Section to ensure the seamless transition of born-digital and digitized records from creating agencies to the digital repository. Occasional in-state travel and overnight travel required (transportation and per diem expenses reimbursed). Occasional Saturday work in the Archives' Public Services Unit (Search Room) required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:

    In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:

    1.Academic training in archival management, library and information science, history, or public administration.
    2.Archival arrangement and description experience.
    3.Academic or work experience in applying archival techniques and metadata standards in the appraisal, arrangement, preservation, and description of born-digital archival records.
    4.Demonstrated knowledge in an academic and/or work environment, to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    5.Demonstrated knowledge in an academic and/or work environment, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and provide customer service.
    6.Valid NC Driver's License, or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
    7.Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs. and can unpack, shelve, and shift large quantities of archival materials. May be required to stand for long periods of time.
    8.Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to chemicals, dust, and mold may be present
    9. Must be able to work on Saturdays, when requested.

    Management preferences:        

    1. Two years progressive experience in archival or records management work.
    2. Thorough knowledge of records management techniques and best practices, including electronic records management.
    3. Academic or work experience in developing and delivering training and coordinating the work of others.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    Master's degree in history, public history, public administration or a related social science discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and one year progressive experience in archives and records work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Management preference:

    Master's degree in library science, public history, history, public administration or related social science.
