As libraries and archives establish commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, BIPOC librarians and archivists of color within these spaces are often engaged in the additional labor of running committees, setting up panels, and educating both patrons and colleagues, even when that labor is not an identified job responsibility. Through this forum, we hope to encourage a conversation that reflects on this labor, its toll on us, the expectations placed on us and those we place on ourselves. We hope to uncover strategies to protect ourselves and our communities from being exploited, tokenized, and used to promote surface-level messaging about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Finally, we hope to explore ways to advocate for DEI work to be taken up by all, rather than remain the final resort for DEI efforts.
