Reveal Digital, part of the non-profit organization ITHAKA, is looking for archives who may wish to be part of developing several Open Access primary source collections on JSTOR.org.
We welcome ideas for content to include, and we can offer support, financial and otherwise, for digitization on site or using our facilities. If your organization holds primary sources relevant to the following themes, please contact us to discuss the possibility of including them in the collections.
- Behind the Scenes of the Civil Rights Movements: This collection will unearth and digitize the histories of civil rights activism by the everyday citizens of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American/Pacific Islander communities. We are seeking nominations for phase 1 of the program, focusing on the Black American experience.
- Documenting White Supremacy and its Opponents in the 1920s: This project, not currently open access, documents the press apparatus of organized white supremacist groups in the 1920s and newspapers depicting grassroots and local opposition and activism against these groups.
- HIV, AIDS & the Arts: This collection will document the artistic response to the epidemic, seeking out the trans* artists, woman artists, and BIPOC artists whose work has yet to be discovered, and will be intentional in seeking to include African artists who are responding to the epidemic through their work. The collection will include all forms of art, from literature and performance to all manner of visual art.
- American Prison Newspapers, 1800-2020: Voices from the Inside: This collection brings together hundreds of prison newspapers written and edited by incarcerated individuals–both official and underground publications.
- Student Activism in 20th-Century America: The collection captures the voices of students across the great range of protest, political actions, and equal-rights advocacy from the 20th and early 21st century United States. The primary sources intended for inclusion will be broad-based across time, geography, and political viewpoint.
For those who may be unfamiliar with Reveal Digital, our focus is on activist, radical and often underseen voices within social movements, and our goal is to make these important primary sources easier for researchers to discover and use. No financial contribution of any kind is expected or required from archives contributing materials. Upholding contributing institutions' stewardship and ownership of their collections is a central tenet of Reveal Digital. Source libraries and rights holders receive digital copies of images and metadata of all of the material they provide to a collection. Reveal Digital makes no ownership claims to the digitized content; all rights to the content reside with the original rights holders or with the source institutions for out-of-copyright material. Content pages in our collections include links to the rights holders and/or source institutions.
Contributors include a broad range of institution types, as well as independent scholars. Examples include: Museum of Performance and Design, Wisconsin Historical Society, State Library of Oregon, and University of California.
