Join Katrina Spencer and Jamillah Gabriel for an examination of overcommitment and setting professional boundaries.


Katrina and Jamillah find themselves in rather similar scenarios: they are Black women and library and information science (LIS) professionals in inaugural roles at their institutions. Without much effort at all, they are often met with proposals from many enthusiastic collaborators and must exercise careful selectivity to make their workloads manageable and prevent burnout. In a field that thrives because of partnerships, teamwork, and shared vision, LIS workers must insist upon work cultures that foster balance, humane pacing, and built-in opportunities for meaningful reflection and assessment, particularly during the ongoing pandemic. Listen as Katrina and Jamillah discuss the cultural norms pushing workers toward overcommitment, the strategies they use to set boundaries, and how they ensure their engagements are indeed rewarding.

Note: The conference guest room block at the Sheraton Boston is currently sold out on Friday, August 26 and Saturday, August 27. However, the hotel does have availability on Saturday night at prevailing rates.
