    The Sargeant Memorial Collection (SMC), the archives and special collections department of the Norfolk Public Library, invites applications for a Library Associate II (Digitization Specialist). The position will be in charge of scanning and digitization workflows along with archival technologies such as CONTENTdm and Archon.

     

    One of Virginia's finest local history and genealogy collections, the Sargeant Memorial Collection is a respected regional archives and special collections of more than 24,000 books, 11,000 microforms, 200,000 photographs, 175 periodicals, 3,000 maps and architectural drawings, and 2,500 linear feet of archives and manuscript collections.

    Description

    The City of Norfolk's Public Library is seeking candidates for a Library Associate II (Digitization Specialist) at Slover Library, Sargeant Memorial Collection (SMC). Work includes managing digitization and metadata workflows, providing reference and technological help to patrons utilizing collections, and facilitating special projects and tasks as assigned. 

    Essential Functions

    ***The departmental hiring rate for this position is $34,445.00 annually***
     

    Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

    ·         Scans, digitizes, and catalogs rare and fragile archival materials and creates metadata for SMC digital collections.

    ·         Manages all scanning and digitization workflows, including overseeing projects of part-time staff and volunteers.

    ·         Provides instruction and reference services to patrons using specialized local history and genealogy materials, archival materials in a variety of media types, and various hardware/software formats. 

    ·         Routinely uses and assists patrons in the use of computers, printers, photocopy machines, microfilm reader-printers, and digital scanners.

    ·         Assists patrons with Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel; uses Photoshop to manage photographs.

    ·         Assists with assigned projects such as digital images, interactive content, collection development, content for the SMC newsletter and other publications.

    ·         Assists with processing of materials and prepares and maintains digital displays. 

    ·         Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports, assisting with outreach activities and training and supervising staff.

    ·         Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education/Experience

    Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field.  Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

    Three years of experience in library, research or related services, including supervisory and/or management experience.

    Driver's license or Commercial Driver's license depending upon area of assignment.

    The preferred candidate will possess

    ·         Familiarity with digitization workflows for one or more media types (e.g., images, text, audio/video).

    ·         Familiarity with an institutional repository or digital collections management system (e.g., CONTENTdm, PastPerfect, DSpace, Omeka, etc.)

    ·         Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and software platforms and train staff accordingly.

    ·         Familiarity with metadata standards (such as DACS, Dublin Core, MODS, and OAI-PMH).

    ·         Experience building digital collections and exhibits; knowledge of digital preservation best practices.

    ·         Excellent project management skills as well as written and oral communications skills. 

    ·         Must be able to tolerate airborne contaminants such as mold, mildew, and dust.

    Additional Information & Requirements

    Work hours: 40 hours/week, days, rotating nights and weekends.
