New England Archivists Spring Meeting Workshops

  • 1.  New England Archivists Spring Meeting Workshops

    Posted Feb 12, 2020 04:50 PM
On Thursday, April 2 New England Archivists will be hosting three workshops in Providence, Rhode Island.  Descriptions of all three workshops can be found below. Click here for more information and to register.
Email Archiving: Strategies, Tools, Techniques (SAA DAS course)
Instructors: Patricia Patterson and Christopher Prom

Email is a chronicle of our time; over 3.5 billion people currently use email, and on an average day, 281 billion messages are sent and received. Confidential and convenient, it provides critical insight into the lives and decisions of institutions and individuals alike. To enable future scholarship and research, libraries and archives must capture, preserve, and provide access to the evidence that email holds. Yet email's complexity has prevented many archives from approaching this work in a systematic way.
Email is a complicated interaction of technical subsystems for composition, transport, viewing, and storage. And archivists must build trust with donors that are turning over these potentially sensitive accounts, capture the collections from many locations, process the multitude of email records, meet privacy and legal considerations, preserve messages and attachments, and facilitate access.

From Idea to Awesome: A Presentation and Workshop Bootcamp
    Instructor: Jennifer Koerber

Have you ever thought about proposing training for NEA or your own institution but weren't sure how to turn an idea into a workshop or presentation? In this session, you'll go through the entire process of developing and presenting the first three minutes of a full-day workshop. Starting with an existing idea or choosing from the Inspiration Box, you'll outline a sequence of lecture and exercises for a full-day session, develop an evaluation form, and present the opening minutes of your completed workshop. Topics include developing ideas and activities, researching what you need to fill in your own knowledge gaps, public speaking and class management techniques, and finding your "trainer style." This workshop is for anyone at any stage of their career. No previous public speaking or lecture experience required.

Collections in Transit: Assessing and Packing Books and Flat Works for Loans
    Instructor: Natalie Granados

Join Natalie Granados, Conservator at the University of Connecticut, for a workshop exploring archival loans. This workshop will cover standard language for assessing the condition of a collection from a conservation/preservation point of view. Examples of condition reports, as well as a customizable assessment report will be provided. In addition, participants will discuss common damages to look out for when assessing paper-based material. Once assessments are completed, the fun part begins… packing! Participants will explore methods of prepping stable, fragile, and structurally unstable books and papers for shipment. Using supplies such as corrugated board, polyethylene foam, magnets and Velcro, participants will create barriers, enclosures and trays for material traveling or stored in pre-made boxes. Please note, this workshop will cover object packing for loan shipments, not conservation treatments.
