    The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at Syracuse University seeks applications for the unique and exciting position of Curator of Recorded Sound & Broadcasting. The successful candidate will combine a passion for the history of recorded sound and broadcasting with excellence in outreach and teaching with primary sources. The Curator of Recorded Sound and Broadcasting will provide curatorial guidance for collections across SCRC with a focus on documenting the history of recorded sound and broadcasting. SCRC holds extensive archival broadcasting collections of notable personalities such as Dick Clark, Gertrude Berg, Stephen Scheuer, Norman Corwin, Ted Koppel, and Mike Wallace. These collections encompass printed and manuscript materials, rare books, and substantial audio and video holdings.

    SCRC's recorded sound holdings total over 500,000 items which include formats from the earliest experimental recordings on tinfoil to one of the largest wax cylinder collections in the country to modern digital media. This position will support student, faculty, and scholarly engagement with the collections through collection development, hands-on instructional sessions, exhibitions, events, and scholarly publications. The Curator also evaluates the SCRC's existing collections and works with SCRC staff to prioritize their ongoing care and maintenance. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Maximize student and faculty engagement with the University's holdings of rare sound recordings and broadcasting collections, develop and offer interactive instructional sessions in the SCRC classrooms for students at all levels. Interpret and promote the collections to both campus and community audiences through exhibitions, social media, public events, and scholarly publications.

    • Conduct an ongoing analysis of collection strengths, and acquire collections through donation and purchase in alignment with SCRC's collecting goals for more inclusive collecting and Syracuse University's academic strategic plan. Cultivate donors and assist in efforts to raise funds for programming, collections, and facilities.

    • Work with SCRC and Libraries staff to help set digitization and preservation priorities for recorded sound and broadcasting holdings. In collaboration with SCRC and Libraries staff to continually enhance and improve digital collections portals and websites providing access to recorded sound and broadcasting collections.

    • Contribute to the day-to-day work of the SCRC by serving on the reference desk, providing advanced reference assistance, and performing other duties as needed.

    • Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the university, and the library profession including, for example, actively participating on a team, committee, or special project; chairing or organizing a workshop, conference, or other professional event; teaching (excluding library instruction sessions or other teaching activities that are explicit job duties); professional consulting; conference discussant, publishing; conducting research that results in a publication or conference presentation.
