  • 1.  First P&C Summer Reading Chat - 6/25!

    Posted Jun 24, 2020 04:15 PM
Just a reminder about our first Summer Reading Chat Thursday June 25th at 12pm CT.

Come join us for our first Privacy and Confidentiality Summer Reading chat this Thursday June 25th at 12pm CT! Our first reading looks at a case study from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln: The Case of the Awgwan: Considering Ethics of Digitization and Access for Archives. The conversation will be led by Anna Tunnicliff, Processing Librarian at the Iowa Women's Archive at the University of Iowa. It's sure to be a lively and timely discussion about privacy, digitization, and access.

For more details about the Summer Reading program and for the Zoom invite, see below. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Anna Tunnicliff (anna-tunnicliff@uiowa.edu) or Rachel Gattermeyer (rgatterm@uwyo.edu). We can't wait to see you there!

Summer Reading with Privacy and Confidentiality program

Would you like to learn more about privacy and confidentiality? Looking to discuss these issues with other archivists? Well, you have an opportunity to do just that with a new P&C summer reading group!

This June, July, and August we'll meet once per month on Zoom to discuss a different topic facing archivists today from a privacy & confidentiality perspective. To keep it simple, we'll have one article to read per meeting, but you can add suggestions for further reading on the group google doc.

June 25th, 12pm CT: Privacy, Ethics and Digital Access –

As we push to make more materials digitally available, we often encounter privacy and ethics issues. When should materials be put online and are there times when we should enforce different levels of access? We'll read a case study together from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the discussion of digital access and privacy that follows it while we consider the challenges of making archival materials openly available online. You can find the article here.

July 16th, 12pm CT: Privacy and Protest –

This summer has seen an incredible amount of social activism. In the SAA's statement on Black Lives and Archives they reminded us to take special care "toward the protection and safety of Black Lives amidst anti-Black violence perpetrated by the police." We'll consider how to protect the privacy of protesters without sacrificing the opportunity to preserve the records of social movements, as we discuss the American Archivist article "Ethical Challenges and Current Practices in Activist Social Media Archives."

    August 6th, 12pm CT: TBD

The topic for this final meeting is open to suggestions from you!
