    Job Description


    Functional Job Title: Digital Archivist



    · Class Summary: The Digital Archivist works under supervision of the Archival Manager for Technology and is responsible for digital initiatives at the Arkansas State Archives. The position is governed by agency/institution policy and state and federal laws.



    · Scope of Work:

    · Works collaboratively on digital initiatives at the Arkansas State Archives, including developing the agency’s digital policies and collections site.

    · Provides guidance to agency staff involved in creating digital collections.

    · Contributes to the development and execution of preservation and digitization plans for audiovisual material.

    · Responsible for the curation of born-digital materials received by the agency.

    · Contributes to the development and execution of the agency’s plan for managing electronic records.

    · Works with donors and representatives of state agencies regarding items to be digitized, including loan and donation paperwork, and accessioning of born-digital and electronic records.

    · Processes archival collections and creates finding aids.

    · Assists with photographing and video recording for projects and events.

    · Provides reference services, promotes the agency’s digital and archival services and speaks at workshops/seminars.

    · Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.



    · Working Relationships: The Digital Archivist has regular contact with division and DAH personnel, general public, various program-related state and federal agencies.



    · Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    · Knowledge of archival requirements and best practices for historical documents and objects.

    · Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and effects on civilizations and cultures.

    · Knowledge of archival inventories.

    · Knowledge of archival collections management software, such as Archivists’ Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, and Preservica.

    · Knowledge of digitization best practices and procedures for photographic prints and negatives, audiocassette tapes, videocassette tapes, audio reel-to-reels, and 16mm video film.

    · Knowledge and understanding of key terms and software programs in the digital archives field.

    · Knowledge of common website platforms.

    · Knowledge of digital photography and scanning.

    · Knowledge of basic photo and video editing practices.

    · Ability to sort, organize, analyze, and search archival collection and inventories.

    · Ability to prepare and present oral and written information and reports.

    · Ability to clean and repair audio-visual material.

    · Competent in the use of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Access, Excel and Power Point.



    · Required Qualifications: The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in history, English or a related field; plus two years of archival or library experience.



    · Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to those who possess knowledge of Arkansas history, experience with the digitization and preservation of various audiovisual formats, experience with electronic records management and forensic recovery of born-digital files, experience with Adobe applications (particularly Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat and Premiere) and Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) certification. Successful candidates must also demonstrate commitment to effective customer service.



    · Special Requirements:

    · Must be able to work some Saturdays.

    · Valid Arkansas drivers license.

    · A pre-employment criminal background check is required.

    · Position is subject to drug screening.
