    Job Description


    Functional Job Title: Archival Assistant

    Class Summary: The Archival Assistant reports to the Archival Manager for Imaging and Preservation, and is responsible for providing technical assistance with microphotography operations. The position is governed by agency/institution policy and state and federal laws.



    Scope of Work:

    · Films, processes and duplicates microfilmed newspapers and records according to agency procedure and archival best practices.

    · Prepares Arkansas newspapers for filming, which involves de-labeling, flattening and removing circulars.

    · Prepares historical documents and state records for filming, which can involve creating an organizational schema for materials based on agency policy and archival best practices.

    · Maintains and updates databases related to work.

    · Communicates microphotography equipment issues to supervisor.

    · Collaborates on digitization projects.

    · Processes archival collections and creates finding aids.

    · Provides technical and customer service support to other departments, staff, and the general public.

    · Assists with the planning and execution of public programs, like workshops and seminars coordinated by the agency and in collaboration with other organizations.

    · Promotes agency resources and services through speaking at agency sponsored events and other venues.

    · Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

    Working Relationships: The Archival Assistant has regular contact with staff, volunteers, state agencies, and the general public.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    · Knowledge of national, state and local history.

    · Knowledge of archival best practices for arrangement and description.

    · Familiarity with film-based camera and film processing procedures.

    · Knowledge of digitization best practices and procedures.

    · Competent in the use of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Access, Excel and Power Point.

    · Ability to research, write and edit historical papers and other printed materials.

    · Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

    · Ability to plan, organize and manage multiple projects.

    · Ability to perform accurate data entry.

    · Customer-service oriented.


    Required Qualifications: The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus four years of years of specialized training and/or experience in library science, historical archival or a related field.


    Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a library or archives setting is preferred.


    Special Requirements:

    · Occasional work outside normal office hours.

    · Occasional travel for workshops or to pick up collections may be required.

    · Ability to lift 40 lbs. with or without accommodations.

    · Valid Arkansas drivers license.

    · A pre-employment criminal background check is required.

    · Position is subject to drug screening.
