Come join us for our Privacy and Confidentiality Summer Reading chat Thursday August 6th at 2pm CT! Our third and final summer reading will look into Big Data and the balance of privacy and access through Emily Larson's recent American Archivist article: Big Questions: Digital Preservation of Big Data in Government. The conversation will be led by Anna Tunnicliff, Processing Librarian at the Iowa Women's Archives at the University of Iowa.

For more details about the Summer Reading program and for the Zoom invite, see below. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Anna Tunnicliff (anna-tunnicliff@uiowa.edu) or Rachel Gattermeyer (rgatterm@uwyo.edu). We can't wait to see you there!

Summer Reading with Privacy and Confidentiality

Would you like to learn more about privacy and confidentiality? Looking to discuss these issues with other archivists? Well, you have an opportunity to do just that with a new P&C summer reading group! This June, July, and August we'll meet once per month on Zoom to discuss a different topic facing archivists today from a privacy & confidentiality perspective. To keep it simple, we'll have one article to read per meeting, but you can add suggestions for further reading on the group google doc.

August 6th, 2pm CT: Privacy and Preserving Big Data –

[note: the chat was originally scheduled for 12pm CT]

Although perhaps not part of our current daily work, Big Data impacts all of our lives and archivists are increasingly called to manage it. For this chat we'll delve into Emily Larson's article Big Questions: Digital Preservation of Big Data in Government which is published in the most recent issue of American Archivist. We'll discuss what Big Data really is, what privacy and confidentiality issues it raises, and what factors do we weigh when also considering the benefits of preserving Big Data while protecting the unaware donors within it.
