    Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the Library of Congress has completed its 2020-2021 revision to the Recommended Formats Statement, a comprehensive document for the long-term preservation of creative work. Textual and recorded music are prominently represented in this document, and we encourage all those who compose, serve, donate, or preserve music materials to have a look at pertinent sections of interest:

The revised standards formally acknowledge music scores in digital form as a category unto their own and identify Music XML and MEI (Music Encoding Initiative) as the preferred formats unique to these files. Those who compose or work with digital music materials in some way are strongly encouraged to consider these formats in the course of their activities. The Recommended Formats homepage and a complete list of all updates to the 2020-2021 statement are available here:

Questions pertaining to formats of textual and music materials should be directed to Ardie Bausenbach (abau@loc.gov), while more general inquiries can be sent to Ted Westervelt (thwe@loc.gov).

    Best,
