An Afternoon with Director Claytee White: Oral History Research Center at UNLV Libraries

Claytee D. White is the inaugural director of the Oral History Research Center for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries. The Oral History Center which is devoted to conducting and collecting audio recorded interviews, sometimes supplemented by video segments, of persons selected for their ability to provide first-hand observations on a variety of historical topics in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. Some of the great projects that we will discuss include:

REFLECTIONS: THE LAS VEGAS ASIAN AMERICAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
A 3-year, $300,000 oral history project collecting stories from the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada.

ALL THAT JAZZ: THOSE WHO PLAYED WITH THE GREATS
This project shows the Strip in the heyday of entertainment from a different angle, from the point of view of band members. What was it like to play behind Sammy Davis, Jr., or Bobby Darrin?

DOCUMENTING THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN LAS VEGAS
A true community project combining the efforts of community advisors, regional cultural heritage repositories, and city and county agencies, this project (2012-2017) collected oral histories as well as photographs, documents, and manuscripts.

Ms. Claytee White received her bachelor's degree from California State University, Los Angeles, master's degree in history from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and has completed work toward a doctorate at the College of William & Mary. White currently serves on the Board of Women of Diversity, the UNLV Presidential Debate Planning Committee, and the Historic Preservation Commission.
