POSITION SUMMARY:
The Curator oversees all activities related to collection development and management, including overseeing preservation actions and priorities, reference/instruction, access/use, and outreach for the Washington University Libraries Film & Media collections, which focus on documentary film. The Curator works closely with library staff, faculty, and students to preserve, make accessible, and promote the use of Special Collections materials for teaching, learning, and scholarship.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· The Curator determines collection priorities, makes all collection-related decisions, and works with Special Collections staff to develop plans for processing, cataloging, preserving, and digitizing collection materials, based on professional best practices.
· The Curator manages access to the collection by providing reference services, which largely entails the licensing of Libraries-owned collection content to external stakeholders. He/she also leads instruction sessions and gives presentations related to the collection as well as works with the other curators to streamline, establish, and evaluate access and use policies, ensuring copyright provisions are upheld.
· The Curator engages in collections activities that include contributing to the collection development policy; acquiring new collections, both purchased and donated; outsourcing appraisals and maintaining valuation records; and cultivating relationships with potential donors. The Curator ensures that these activities are done in compliance with institutional policies and procedures.
· The Curator seeks to raise accessibility to the collection and improve efficiencies by pursuing grant funding and strategic partnerships for the areas of activities described above.
· The Curator promotes the collection and engages the community-at-large through various outreach initiatives and activities including, but not limited to, the curation of physical and digital exhibitions, film screenings, speakers, panel discussions, and teacher workshops/seminars.
Required Qualifications
· Master's degree or advanced certificate in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
· At least three to five years of experience working with archival moving image and audio collections.
· Knowledge of analog and digital moving image and audio formats and respective preservation and access needs/challenges.
· Demonstrated hands-on experience working with analog and digital moving image and audio collections.
· Experience navigating copyright, licensing, and intellectual property issues.
· Knowledge of film production outputs and workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
· Formal moving image management training highly preferred.
· Experience providing instruction and/or university-level teaching experience.
· Experience with successful grant-writing and grant management.
· Expertise in a subject area relevant to the collection, such as American Culture Studies, Film & Media Studies, American History, African-American Studies.
· Experience managing preservation activities, projects, initiatives, etc. and associated budgets.
· Expressed interest in collection subject matters.
· Evidence of excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
· Excellent organization and analytic skills.
· Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
· Working knowledge of MS Office applications.
· Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service.
· Prior experience working in an academic research library, ideally in academic archives.
· Ability to identify moving image formats, techniques and materials preferred.
· Experience with Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut, or similar video editing application.
Salary Range
The hiring range for this position is $52,943 - $68,816 annually.
