    Position Summary: 

    Utah State University (USU) Libraries seek a collaborative, innovative, flexible thinking, and service-minded librarian to contribute to the Libraries' digital preservation efforts. The Digital Assets/Accessioning Librarian serves on the newly-formed Digital Stewardship Team, comprised of members from the Cataloging and Metadata, Digital Initiatives, Special Collections, and Information Technology units. The Team is responsible for the development and implementation of digital preservation procedures, processes, and workflows for born digital and digitized information created by or donated to Utah State University. The Digital Assets/Accessioning Librarian is primarily responsible for providing technical guidance and support to curators and librarians on the development and implementation of workflows, best practices, and policies associated with the onboarding, appraisal, and ingestion of born digital information, including electronic records, digital objects (text, image, audiovisual), web pages, and datasets. This position will liaise with multiple internal and external stakeholders, including curators, catalogers, systems analysts, vendors, and donors to establish sustainable and cohesive onboarding, evaluating, and ingesting processes for digital file appraisal.

    Reporting to Head of Digital Initiatives, the position is a 12-month, tenure track faculty appointment with rank as Assistant Librarian. The anticipated start date is February 1, 2020. 

     
    Review of applications will begin on November 25, 2019 and continue until the position has been filled. 

     
    Responsibilities: 

    • Investigate and implement scalable processes for onboarding, ingesting, and storing born digital material. 
    • Work with the Library's Digital Stewardship Team and Information Technology unit to evaluate and recommend platforms for ingesting, storing, and managing digital assets. 
    • Work with the Library's Digital Stewardship Team and Information Technology unit to evaluate and recommend platforms for archiving the University's electronic information, with particular emphasis on University websites, email, and digital records. 
    • Contributes to the development of digital preservation workflows including ingesting, managing, file naming, preserving, and storing digital materials. 
    • Provide documentation and training for library staff, student workers, and interns for how to successfully follow these processes. 
    • Document policies, procedures, and processes for establishing quality control measures to ensure compliance with national and institutional specifications. 
    • Provide support to curators and members of the Digital Stewardship Team to identify and prioritize collections for risk, obsolescence, or discoverability, including existing backlogs and imminent digital acquisitions. 
    • Participate as part of the professional community to stay up to date on new programs, standards, and developments within the rapidly-growing digital archives field. 
    • Serves as a member of the Library's Digital Stewardship Team. 
    • Serves as a member of the Library's Digital Preservation Committee. 
    • Serves as a member of the Library's Disaster Preparedness and Response Team.

    Qualifications: 

     

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Science, or related field (awarded or near complete). 
    • Must possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including effectively communicating technical issues to non-technical staff. 
    • Must possess ability to work creatively, flexibly, independently, and collaboratively in a service-oriented, dynamic environment. 
    • Demonstrated problem solving skills. 
    • Demonstrated proficiency working with a variety of digital formats (i.e. image, audio, video, text). 
    • Knowledge of archival theory and methodology. 
    • Knowledge of current digital preservation strategies, standards, and best practices. 
    • Familiarity with national metadata standards and best practices. 
    • Familiarity with new and emerging technologies in digital preservation. 
    • Familiarity with digital asset management systems. 
    • Interest in pursuing ongoing continuing education and certification and working with professional groups in the library and archival field. 
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail. 
    • Ability to set and follow through on both individual and team priorities. 
    • Ability to meet the university's requirements for promotion and tenure. 

     

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Project management experience. 
    • Experience in an academic library setting. 
    • Experience working with digital asset management systems (such as CONTENTdm or DigitalCommons), archival collection management systems (such as ArchivesSpace), digital preservation platforms (such as ArchivematicaPreservica), or web archiving systems (such as Archive-It). 
    • Experience working with a digital forensic workstation, including using a forensic writeblocker, creating disk images, operating the BitCurator software and file system and metadata utilities to analyze digital files. 
    • Experience evaluating digital files for integrity, authenticity, and possible obsolescence. 
    • Experience writing technical and procedural documentation. 
    • Member of the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA). 
    • Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) Certificate from the Society of American Archivists.
