    The Marian Library at the University of Dayton is recognized internationally as a center for scholarship on the Blessed Virgin Mary. It serves the research needs of faculty and students of the University of Dayton community and visitors worldwide. It also documents the diverse expressions of popular devotion to Mary, and it provides public outreach through its exhibits, tours and reference services. The Marian Library's holdings include over 100,000 circulating books; over 12,000 rare books; almost 8,000 bound periodicals; over 1,000 linear feet of archival material, and over 13,000 artworks.     Librarian for Visual Resources, Assistant / Associate Professor 

    The Marian Library includes over 13,000 artworks, as well as compelling visual materials in its archival and periodical/monograph collections. The Visual Resources Librarian will manage the art collection in the Marian Library. This is a full-time faculty position with the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, reporting to the Director of the Marian Library. The University Libraries provide significant professional support to tenure-track librarians. Salary is competitive. Excellent benefits along with 22 days of vacation per year. The University offers educational opportunities to faculty and staff, as well as many athletic, performing arts and scholarly events.The Dayton region offers a wide variety of housing options and a rich menu of arts and culture including opera, ballet, philharmonic, theater, an art institute, and more.     Responsibilities 
    • Oversight of the Marian Library's art management software, including implementation of metadata standards, a possible migration to a new system, development of appropriate workflows for data entry, and work to create a public-facing interface.
    • Promotion of the art collection to potential users. Collaboration, as appropriate, on promoting visual materials in Marian library archival and periodical/monograph collections.
    • Administration of art loan program.
    • Curatorial responsibility for art exhibits onsite and online, independently or in collaboration and consultation as appropriate.
    • Marian Library art collection development, including managing donations of artwork in accordance with the collection development policy.
    • Supervision of curatorial assistant /volunteer coordinator; possible supervision of student employees.
    • Serving as the University Libraries' liaison to the Art & Design Department, which includes collaborating with and supporting department faculty on curricular and research projects; overseeing collection budgets; and managing art-related content in the Roesch Library monographs, periodicals, and electronic resources.
    • Additional responsibilities: in-depth reference service; outreach for tours and instruction across all Marian Library collection areas; contributing to University Libraries communication and marketing efforts; other responsibilities as assigned.
    • The incumbent may assist University Archives and Special Collections with the University of Dayton art collection.
    • Scholarly activities and professional service in accordance with UD Libraries and University of Dayton requirements for promotion and tenure.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Minimum of 33 credit hours completed at the time of application towards an MLS from an ALA-accredited program or its international equivalent, with an expected graduation of May 2019.
    • College-level coursework in art, art history, art education, or a related field (at least 15 credits).
    • Excellent written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet University Libraries' promotion and tenure standards in librarianship, scholarship, and service.
    • Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires at least five full years of post-graduate experience working as a professional librarian and a strong record of peer-reviewed scholarship.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Successful experience working with visual/art collections.
    • Successful experience working with religious art or religious visual materials.
    • Successful experience using metadata standards such as CCOCDWAVRA Core, AAT, or similar.
    • Supervisory experience
    • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in visual resources and art libraries.
    • Basic knowledge of EmbARK or similar art collection management software.
    • Successful experience teaching.
    • Evidence of strong oral communication skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team with faculty, staff and a growing culturally diverse campus population.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of preservation and conservation best practice.
    • Successful experience with digitization and developing digital projects.
    • Appreciation for the University's Catholic and Marianist education values.

    • Work with library management systems such as Sierra.
    • Outreach responsibility for tours and instruction across all collection areas.
    • Selection of books for digitization.
    • Collaboration in the digitization process as appropriate.
    • Curation of exhibits on-site and online.
    • Liaison work to coordinate cataloging, interlibrary loan, and acquisitions for the Marian Library.
    • Management of the Marian Library stacks and reference desk including training student employees.
    • Contributing to University Libraries communication and marketing efforts.
    • Other related responsibilities as assigned. 
    • The incumbent may take on other responsibilities as appropriate, including general editorial tasks and liaison work with the University's Religious Studies Department.
    • Scholarly activities and professional service in accordance with UD Libraries and University of Dayton requirements for promotion and tenure.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires at least five full years of post-graduate experience working as a professional librarian and a strong record of peer-reviewed scholarship.

    • Reading knowledge of one or more languages (besides English) relevant to current Marian Library collections such as French, Spanish, German, Latin, and/or Italian.
    • Reading knowledge of one or more languages in which the Marian Library collection has significant potential for improvement, such as Korean or Arabic.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of preservation and conservation best practice.
    • Successful experience with digitization and developing digital projects.
    • Successful experience with a library management system such as Sierra.
    • Appreciation for the University's Catholic and Marianist education values.
