    From the Security Section:

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). Each September multiple agencies responsible for different and overlapping areas of security, relief, preparedness, response, and recovery focus on promotion of emergency and disaster planning awareness. Through programs and the Website, ready.gov >https://www.ready.gov<, they offer training and resources for family and all communities to use in disaster planning, now, and throughout the year.

The 2020 NPM theme is: "Disasters Don't Wait. Make Your Plan Today."

    The official hashtag #BeReady

Among the resources at ready.gov is a 4 week action plan that can used by families or institutions. They make it easy for small organizations (e.g. Lone arranger situations) to participate, there are graphics, social media tips, and downloads for posters or brochures.

One of the participating agencies in the NPM program is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Although CISA covers infrastructure, communication, parts of the COVID response and election security, this year CISA "recommends users and administrators use this month as an opportunity to asses cybersecurity preparedness for cyber-related events, such as identity theft, ransomware infection, or a data breach."

Archivists are responsible for doing their part to secure all their electronic resources, and are part of a series of connections that are at risk, beyond just their digital collections. And if computers are used in the archival environment, they add to the risk to all collections.

Ready.gov has material on handling cybersecurity, and CISA also adds "[t]ips for resources on preparing for, and responding to, unexpected cyber-related events:

The Security Section of SAA will be producing a series Security Briefings to call attention to events and resources available to SAA, the profession, and the community in general. The team is being spearheaded by new volunteers. If you have something to add to the briefings, please send it to us by return email.
