Unknown Fate of Afghan Film

In 2008, the staff of Afghan Film were awarded the Society of American Archivists' Spotlight Award for the extraordinary measures they took to preserve the national film collection from destruction at the hands of the Taliban. Although some of the films were subsequently restored and digitized, it is unclear how many are still at risk. Of more concern on a humanitarian level, the present director of Afghan Film, now in Kiev, reported that as of August 18 there were still 30 Afghan Film staff and family members in Kabul. Since then I have learned that a number of them were able to evacuate. Presently Afghan Film is still operating although the Taliban have forbidden the women staff to return. With the evacuations ending, the prospects for Afghan Film and those remaining behind are dim.
