The Twelfth Scone Foundation Archivist Award April 4th at 6 p.m. at the Grolier Club

Posted on behalf of Ken Soehner. The Twelfth Scone Foundation Archivist Award will take place at the Grolier Club, 47 E 60th street, on April 4th at 6 pm, with a reception to follow. This award honors archivists for their efforts to ensure important historical events are not forgotten or overlooked. Past honorees include albert Knoll, Archivist at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, and Dr. Yehoshua Freundlich, formerly the State Archivist of Israel and Mr. Khader Salameh, director of the Islamic Museum and director of the al-Aqsa Mosque library This year the award honors Gwendolyn Midlo Hall and Kwesi DeGraft-Hanson. Active in the civil rights movement since the age of 16, Ms. Hall (now 90) is an award-winning historian who has authored a number of important monographs and books on colonialism and slavery. Based on her research in town halls and courthouses in the deep South, Professor Hall created a searchable database identifying the genealogical origin of 100,000 slaves. This database was the first of its kind and has become a model for libraries and archives. Mr. DeGraft-Hanson, born in Ghana, came to the United States for graduate studies in landscape architecture. Investigating the use of colonial concrete made from oyster shells, his efforts brought him to walk the remnants of the Butler Plantation and the extant Ten Broeck race course of Savannah, Georgia, site of the largest slave auction in this country. Mr. DeGraft-Hanson has written elegantly about that 1859 auction. Responsible for having a marker placed on the site, he is now engaged in creating a permanent memorial on that landscape. Marcus Naylor, whose film credits include Malcom X and Without a Trace will read a compelling description of the sale. ARLIS/NY members are welcome to attend this program to celebrate these two exceptional honorees. Please RSVP to sconefoundation@yahoo.com
